133TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY
On April 14, 1891, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar was born at Mhow Cantonment, where his father was an Army officer. The caste that Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was born into was regarded as the lowest of the low. However, it was this individual who drafted the nation's Constitution. His life was filled with hardships since the Upper Castes openly opposed his extreme suggestions for ending the Caste System. The legendary doctor not only defied all societal and institutional expectations to pursue his education, but he also astonishingly graduated with a doctorate in economics from Columbia University in 1917. The young man who endured severe caste humiliation went on to become the nation's first Minister of Law and drafted the Constitution for free India.
We may recognize Dr. Ambedkar's challenge to the status quo in his fight against Brahmanical Patriarchy, his bold suggestions for the Hindu Code Bill, and his recommendations for a radical reconstruction of property relations. Perhaps the most radical thinker in India, Dr. Ambedkar changed the social and political climate in the fight against British Colonialism by raising the consciousness of the oppressed of their own plight. Ambedkar is credited with telling the Dalits to "Educate, Agitate, and Organise," a statement that still has great significance today
